For over 30 years, I have strived to photograph people as they truly are – as genuine beings and expressions of a unique life on the Faroe Islands. The essence of my photographic work lies in capturing the moment when everything is freed from external influences, and a person can be entirely themselves. I aim to step back as a photographer and let the fleeting moment of inspiration be the focus of my work – the moment when everything becomes one, and the image almost creates itself.
The distinctive landscapes of the Faroe Islands serve as the background for my work, along with a community of around 50,000 people who live in strong contrast between ancient traditions, harsh living conditions, and modernity. This society is marked by an intense closeness to nature and a deep connection to the elements of fishing, sheep farming, and survival, nestled between the sky and the sea, and exposed to the forces of nature.
We are familiar with the spectacular natural images and drone footage of the Faroe Islands. However, with my photos, I invite the viewer to delve deep into the inner life of the islands, to experience the struggles and triumphs of its people, and to observe some controversial traditions like whaling up close.
As a local who has experienced the extremes of the islands in all their facets, I chose the title ‘Local Perspectives.’ With my knowledge and perspective, I aim to provide the viewer with profound insights into the life and secrets of the Faroe Islands.
